EVENTS IN KNOTTINGLEY
DURING 1943

NAVAL SCHOLARSHIP
One of only a few scholarships offered in the country each year, tenable at the Dartmouth Naval College for boys wishing to continue their education at a naval school and take up the Navy as a career, has been won by Philip Backhouse, the 13 year old son of Mr. Backhouse (Baker), of Aire Street, Knottingley.

800 POSTAL ORDERS DISPATCHED
The Executive Committee of the Knottingley Services Welfare Association have completed their task of sending Christmas Postal Orders to the local men and women serving in H.M. Forces. Some 800 of the value of 10s each, have been sent to all parts of the world, As a part of the Association's efforts, each man or woman whose whereabouts are known, will have received £1 from the Association during the year.

HOME GUARD DANCE
A very successful dance was arranged by members of the Knottingley Home Guard last week, in the Town Hall. There was a large crowd and 'spot' waltzes were won by Mr. A.J. Barratt and Miss Hardy, Mr. C. Johnson and Mrs Ballard. The refreshments were in the capable hands of Mrs Eades and Mrs Bains. Lieutenants Plews, Cooper and Harper had charge of the arrangements.

CIVIL DEFENCE LECTURES
Lectures for members of the Civil Defence, the Home Guard and the National Fire Services, began in the Town Hall, Knottingley, on Tuesday. The first, on Civil Defence Organisation and Control, was given by Inspector T. Downhill, the Area Organiser of Pontefract, with a talk on Civil Defence Messenger's Services by Mr S. Lee. It was well attended. The Lectures have been arranged by the surveyor to the Knottingley Council, Mr. G.J. Laverick.

TOWN HALL DANCE
A dance was held in the Town Hall, Knottingley, on Christmas Eve, for the King George V1 Fund (Merchant Navy Section). Mr W. Lucas was the M.C. and there was a crowded assembly. Refreshments were served by Mesdames F. Brook and T Bedford, and the stewards were Messrs. R. Jackson, R Morrell, A Jackson, N Carlos, and S Burton. During the interval a collection was taken in the 'Old Red Duster' (Red Ensign or Merchant Navy Flag) lent by the Ellerman Wilson Line, of Hull. The sum of £53 has been sent to the above fund. The organisers were Mr W.Lucas and Mr S. Burton.

SCHOOL REPORTS
The children of the Knottingley Modern School arranged their own Term-end concert, which was held on Wednesday week, and gave the proceeds of £3.18s to the 'United Aid for China Fund'. As a result of the annual Christmas concert by the children of the Weeland Council School, £4.4s was raised for the 'Aid to China and Russia' funds, and £2.2s will be sent to each. Among the plays greatly appreciated by the parents were 'The Wolf and the Three Little Pigs', 'The Golden Goose', 'The Witches Ball in the Moon', 'Puss in Boots', 'The Spick and Span Stove', and 'The Magic Soup'

DIED IN JAPANESE PRISON
As stated last week, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, of 7 West View, Womersley Road, Knottingley, have received notification that their son Stoker G.W. Crawford has died in the Japanese Prison at Sokuoka.

KILLED IN ACTION
Rifleman John Robert Andrews, formerly of Knottingley, whose death in Italy was reported last in the Express last week.

ESCAPED
Cpl Harold Bugg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bugg, of 5 Westfield Road, Knottingley, was wounded and taken prisoner when Tobruk fell, and was sent to Italy. His parents have now received word that he escaped from the prison camp and is now in the south of Italy. He is expected home in the next convoy to arrive in England.

HOUSE OFFERED
The detached house 'Greystones', Ropewalk, Knottingley, belonging to Mr. J. Hollingworth, was offered for sale with vacant possession by Messrs Bentley and Son, at the L&Y Hotel on Monday, but withdrawn at £600, along with a warehouse. Carter, Bentley & Gundill were the vendors solicitors.
