NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
That the inhabitants of this Town are requested to attend at the School House on Thursday the 5th June next, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, to consider the propriety of forming a Select Vestry and other business.

At a meeting held at the School House in Knottingley the 5th day of June 1823 to appoint a Select Vestry, a notice being first duly given for that purpose. The following persons are hereby appointed,

Robt Long; Wm Moorhouse junr; Wm Smithson
John Hoyland; Maw Long; John Hepworth

WEST RIDING of YORKSHIRE
Whereas in and by the statute made and passed in the fifty ninth year of the reign of his late Majesty King George the Third instituted “An Act to Amend the Laws for the Relief of the Poor.” The inhabitants of my Parish in Vestry assembled are empowered to establish a Select Vestry for the concern of the poor of such Parish and to that end to nominate and elect in the same or any subsequent Vestry, or any adjournment thereof respectively, such and so many substantial householders or occupiers within such Parish, not exceeding the number of twenty, nor less than five, as shall in any such Vestry be thought fit to be members of the Select Vestry. And the Rector, Vicar, or Minister of the Parish, and in his absence the Curate thereof (such Curate being resident in and charged to the Poor’s Rates of such Parish). And the Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor for the time being, together with the Inhabitants, who shall be nominated and elected aforesaid (such inhabitants being first thereto appointed by writing under the hand and seal of one of His Majesty’s Justice of the Peace which appointment he is hereby authorised and required to make) shall be and constitute a Select Vestry for the care and management of the concerns of the poor of such Parish, and every such Select Vestry shall continue and be empowered to act from the time of the appointment thereof until fourteen days after the next Annual appointment of Overseers of the Poor of the Parish shall take place. And whereas it has been this day duly made to appear unto me, being one of His Majesty’s Justice of the Peace for the said Riding that the inhabitants of the Township of Knottingley in the said Riding in Vestry assembled on the 5th day of June Instant have, in pursuance of the powers contained in the said statute, established on the Select Vestry for the care and management of the concerns of the poor of the said Township and to that end have in the same Vestry nominated and elected twelve substantial householders and occupiers within the said Township whose names are hereinafter mentioned to be members of such Select Vestry. I therefore, by virtue and in pursuance of the authority given to me by the statute aforesaid do hereby appoint the same substantial householders and occupiers, that is to say, Thomas Shillito, Edward Gaggs, William Allen, Mark Carter, Edward Tomlinson, Robert Long, William Moorhouse junr, William Smithson, John Hoyland, Maw Long, John Hepworth and Thomas Atkinson to be members of the said Select Vestry so established as aforesaid for the care and management of the concerns of the poor of the said Township of Knottingley in the said Riding.

TATE: Widow Tate & children reduced to 2/- weeklY
WILSON: Willm Wilson son allowed 1/6d weekly
WAINWRIGHT: Widow Wainwright & children reduced to 5/- weekly
CROSBY: Thos Crosby be furnished with a jacket and shirt
BRIGGS: Widow Brigg’s rent be paid and her goods marked

7th July 1823

BARBER: John Barber allowed 3/- per week.
WILSON: Richd Wilson’s application for arrears of rent/rates? should not be paid. Refused as he is considered to have sufficient earnings coming in to enable him to pay them.
GREENWOOD: Widow Greenwood be taken into workhouse

4th August 1823

BEETHAM: Jane Beetham’s child be taken into workhouse
BARBER: John Barber allowed 4/- per week
WEBB: Thomas Webb allowance reduced to 1/- per week
GREENWOOD: Widow Greenwood allowed 3/- per week

That the accounts as entered in the ledger to this day be allowed

18th August 1823

WOOD: Elenor Wood’s pay of 2/- per week taken off and she shall come into workhouse
MALTBY: Judith Maltby’s pay of 1/- per week taken off and she shall come into workhouse
GILL: Sarah Gill’s child pay reduced from 2/6d to 1/6d per week
TINDALE: Widow Tindale’s pay be 4/- per week in future
JACKSON: That the 2/- and 1/- rates of Mr Thomas Jackson be immediately collected

That Mr J Allison do go to Barnsley and enquire and report at what ages Manufacturers will take children of both sexes apprentice, and on what terms.

23rd September 1823

MALTBY: Judith Maltby’s case was decided properly at the last meeting
WOOD: Elenor Wood’s case was also considered at the last meeting and no alteration made
ARMITAGE: Widow Armitage allowed 1/- per week
SEARBY: Widow Searby have nothing advanced she having £8 from the club to bury her husband
TINDALE: Widow Tindale to have 5/- per week until 1st April next 1824

13th October 1823

That all the pauper children of a proper and suitable age be put out apprentice to respectable manufacturers at Barnsley

10th November 1823

TRAVIS: That application be made to Wm Travis for the amount of rent paid by the Town on his account and if he refuses that he be summoned before the Magistrate
